Professional Bio

Richard A. Castellano is the founder and managing owner of CASTELLANO PLLC, a boutique intellectual property law firm located in the Washington, DC area.  He is a lead trial attorney and a registered patent attorney with a technology background and brings big-firm caliber expertise from prior partnerships in larger law firms to deliver high quality, personalized IP services at a reasonable cost. 

Richard Castellano is an expert in patent preparation and prosecution, and commercial litigation and trial practice.  He combines his expertise and commitment to superb client service to deliver clear, timely, cost-effective results in IP protection, defense, and enforcement. 

 

Intellectual Property and Unfair Competition Litigation and Trial

Richard Castellano is routinely retained by major technology corporations, universities, and start-ups to handle complex patent, trademark, and trade secret disputes, build high value patent portfolios, and provide opinion counseling.  He actively litigates throughout the federal system, including U.S. district courts nationwide, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), where he began his career as a law clerk.  His cases have resulted in published judicial opinions, including multiple precedential Federal Circuit decisions.

Attorney Castellano's practice includes patent drafting, prosecution, and opinion counseling.  Richard Castellano has prosecuted thousands of patent applications across the full range of technological arts. He frequently represents clients on either side of the aisle in Post-Grant Review and Inter Partes Review proceedings, and regularly appears before the PTAB, and in appeals to the Federal Circuit. Clients further benefit from effective opinion counseling based on his combined extensive experience in patent prosecution and litigation.

Trademark Protection and Counseling

 

Richard Castellano's practice includes trademark counseling and federal trademark registration.  He has prosecuted myriad federal trademark applications across a range of industries, including restaurant, sailboat and yacht manufacturers, marine industry, arms and weaponry, social media, educational institutions, veterinary, dentistry, cosmetics and skin care, commercial products, power supply systems, high technology, and many others. He represents clients on either side of the aisle in trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings and appears before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), and in appeals to the Federal Circuit. Clients further benefit his combined extensive experience in trademark trademark litigation in federal courts and the ITC.

Recognition

Mr. Castellano was selected to Super Lawyers Rising Stars for Intellectual Property in Washington, DC (2018-2021) and rated in the top 2.5% of Intellectual Property attorneys in Washington D.C. for four consecutive years based on independent research, peer evaluation, and selection from small, medium, and large law firms.
